Independence Day is right around the corner! Here are a few things you might not have known about this uniquely American holiday:

    

#1Two Days Too Soon

John Adams knew that Independence Day would be popular, but he got the date wrong! He wrote: “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding Generations as the great anniversary Festival.” Adam’s prediction was correct, but it was two days too early. Congress finally approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, and the rest, as they say, is history.1

        

#2Kindred Spirits to the End

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence to later serve terms as President, both died on July 4th, 1826, which was also the 50th anniversary of the original signing. 2

        

#3Get in Line

July 4th is consistently ranked as one of the busiest travel days of the year. AAA estimated that 43 million people traveled for Independence Day in 2016. 3

        

#4A Lot of Bucks for the Bang

The American Pyrotechnic Association estimated that Americans spent more than $800 million dollars on fireworks for their 2016 July 4th celebrations. That’s a lot of sparklers! 4
